Of course, Punk’s personal life was far more rewarding to him. He would remain there the rest of his career. He loved truck driving, loved the peace and quiet, the radio tuned to his favorite station, and no boss looking over his shoulder. (Turns out he was a “junior” after all.)Īfter a few years at Holroyd, Punk went to work driving a truck for West Michigan Industries in 1982, which is now known as West Michigan Pallet. Not long after, he left the temp agency and found steadier work at Holroyd Excavating, driving a truck, just like his dad. He enjoyed it there, yet missed West Michigan, so he eventually transferred back to Kalamazoo Valley Community College, to resume his architectural studies.Īfter going to school for a few years, Punk decided to leave college and go to work fulltime, taking a job at Murco. He had a true passion for the sport, and raced cars from the start of high school, until the start of his family, still a few years down the road.Īfter he graduated from Plainwell in 1969, Punk left West Michigan, to attend Lawrence Technological Institute in Metro Detroit. By the time he reached Plainwell High School, he’d discovered another love: car racing. He loved sports of all kinds as a kid, and especially loved football and baseball.
The little Punk would be joined by his little sister Sally and little brother Greg in the family’s home in Plainwell. When he was born, his father took one look at him and joked, “You’re just a little punk!” The name stuck. Of course, he never went by Wesley, not even from day one. Yet on December 30, 1950, Wesley and Beverly (Howard) Williams found a reason to celebrate, a belated Christmas gift, with the birth of their first child, a baby son they named Wesley David Williams, Jr., after his father. Those were tumultuous times in this country, which saw American soldiers once again head to the South Pacific, this time entering into the Korean War. Punk’s story began on a snowy winter day in 1950, as New Year’s Eve approached in Allegan, Michigan. His life, and his legacy, lives on in them today. He could be stubborn, and he loved to tease people and have a good time, but family was truly his reason for being. Punk, as he was called, was a hard working, fun-loving family man, who devoted his life to his daughters, and his grandkids, too. Wesley “Punk” Williams was about as great a dad as a person could ask for.
